Welcome back to Hump Day Update, the place to find out everything you need to know about what’s been going on in the entertainment world for the week. I’m Rachel A.G. Gilman. But enough about me, let’s get to the news.
NBC is debuting its latest project “Great News,” which is being executive produced by Tina Fey and features the oddities that come to pass with working in a newsroom, especially when your mother decides she wants to intern there. I’m hoping the series doesn’t give my own mom any ideas.
Beyoncé is celebrating the anniversary of her album “Lemonade” by giving back and helping four girls attend college. Her induction into sainthood is already being planned and will be photographed even more beautifully than her pregnancy has been.
The Netflix show “13 Reasons Why” has gotten a lot of talk lately because of its depiction of suicide and mental illness, particularly featuring a very graphic scene in its finale. They say any press is good press. I say the number of articles I’ve read about it now means I can remove it from my queue and get to more important things.
Harry Styles revealed this week on a radio program that he wrote more than seventy songs for his upcoming solo album, and he shared a few with fellow Brit Ed Sheeran. Before you get jealous, assume that this conversation resembled all other conversations between dudes you know: a lot of head nodding before discussing the upcoming sports match.
Freeform is dealing with the end of some of its favorite shows by bringing on a new show starring Bella Thorne called “Famous in Love,” which focuses on the very big problems of a rising star as she tries to choose the best options in her wild career as well as who to fall for: we have Jake – tall, dark-haired, and stereotypically handsome – and we have Rainer – tall, dark-haired, and stereotypically handsome. You get the problem here?
Rebecca Black attended the first half of Coachella and is now working on rebooting her music career, including continuing to popularize her YouTube channel and releasing another single. I think we’re up to Wednesday or Thursday for her days of the week album, so thank god I now have a tune to dance to all the time.
In Stephen Colbert news, he had a lot of fun trying to say goodbye to Bill O’Reilly this week on “The Late Show” by bringing back his alter ego (sorry… his cousin) and by taking on a new role as Tuck Buckford, a radical political pundit who likes chili and screaming. Hey, as long as we keep getting the shots of Colbert’s creamy legs in briefs, I’m all for it.
After the very successful release of his new album, Kendrick Lamar announced a tour in support of it, where he will be accompanied by Travis Scott and D.R.A.M. as supporting acts. When fans found out about the line-up, all they had to say was, “Damn.”
And finally, the list of television shows that could be getting cancelled in the near future was released by TV Guide this week, and among the names of possible removals were ABC’s “Once Upon A Time,” where everyone has basically turned into a princess and a monster at some point; Fox’s “New Girl,” because I guess quirkiness stop being cool in 2011; and the CW’s “The Originals,” which you’re probably Googling right now. If these shows are worth saving, I’m not sure my already stuffed DVR has the space to try boosting their ratings.
